What to Look For In a Whiskey Glass

What to Look For In a Whiskey Glass

Article by Matt Saunders

Without a doubt, whiskey is a beautiful drink enjoyed by millions of people across the world. Drank on its own over ice or served with a mixer such as coke, whiskey is generally served in a slim half pint glass or a tumbler.

In this article we want to go beyond the norm and look at the numerous other types of whiskey glasses which are available on the market. So if you are an avid whiskey drinker, strap yourself in as we take you through some whiskey glass types you may not have come across!

The Nosing Glass

These glasses are generally an obscure shape, rather similar to that which one would expect to be served a nice European ale in, but with a little more sophistication.

The shape of these glasses is designed to provide a full bodied scent of the whiskey as you drink it, meaning you get a rich experience. Typically you will drink neat whiskey from a nosing glass because unless you are very passionate about the drink, it is unlikely you will be drinking from a nosing glass!

The Tumbler

Tumbler glasses are the most common glasses for drinking whiskey from and are available in a multitude of different styles. Tumblers are generally small and easily grasped, and they look absolutely stunning with a measure of golden whiskey and 2 blocks of ice!

Available with round bottoms, angle-cut rims and made from crystal, the tumbler glass is a popular choice for drinkers and gift buyers also. They are usually low cost and quite often hand cut which makes a superb quality glass for your finest whiskies!

The Spout

These tall and thin glasses are great for serving whiskey with a mixer. Mixers can be cola, lemonade or other non-alcoholic beverages and are designed for people who do not like to drink neat whiskey because it is a little too strong in flavour. Whiskey can still be enjoyed with a mixer but for the true experience you need to drink it neat over ice.

Why buy a whiskey glass?

Put it this way – would you drink wine from a beer mug? Many people do not see the need to enjoy whiskey from an actual whiskey glass but the connoisseur wouldn’t have it any other way.
