Becoming A Single Malt Scotch Whiskey Expert

Becoming A Single Malt Scotch Whiskey Expert

Mark Etinger

The range of types, tastes, and qualities of booze have a breadth that could shock anyone. You really could never know all of the amazing variations of “spirits” that are available. It is quite frankly a staggering array of whiskeys , vodkas, scotches, and many others. There are amazing high end single malt scotch whiskey and low end ones that will “get the job done.” There is Grey Goose Vodka and then dozens of flavored vodkas to consider. If you are not a person who knows their booze just know there is a plethora of options you have probably never even come in contact with.

Understanding alcoholic beverages is a discipline it would take a lifetime to master. It is not that the whole world of liquor is unknowable but whenever you think you have a handle on it new things come down the pike. Honestly I’m a fairly informed drinker(or so I thought) but Balvenie, Glenrothes, Talisker, Glenmorangie, and many other names I recently unearthed were completely new to me. I need to go to bartender school just to order a drink now. I used to be the kind of guy who would just order a Disaronno Amaretto on the rocks because I had seen it on a commercial. What a dunce!

Since getting tipped off to the variety and potential quality of different kinds of alcohol I have tried to get in to single malt scotch whiskey. It seems to be the drink I enjoy the most and I figure since I will never figure out everything about all these different kinds of spirits I should stick to one and become an expert. So I have taken to trying a wide arrange of single malt scotches and a variety of whiskeys. I honestly am still too much of a rube to know what’s good, what’s great and what just plain stinks, but I think I’ve decided I don’t enjoy Jack Daniels Whiskey. So at least we’re narrowing things down some!

Alcohol when drank in moderation can be an amazing social lubricant and a nice pleasant way to relax. Alcohol when drank in moderation and with a vast knowledge of its potential can make you look like a dignified well informed aristocrat.

I never thought drinking properly could have such a positive effect on my social life. Once you start learning about booze you realize most people barely have a grasp of what they are drinking. Honestly, I am still no expert but my friends seem to think I am. We’ve been out recently and suddenly I am a taste maker. Here’s hoping I am not leading them the wrong way.

The Whiskey Place is your source for single malt scotch whiskey by legendary distilleries such as Glenmorangie, Glenfiddich, and Glenrothes.
