Choosing the Finest Whiskey Glasses

Choosing the Finest Whiskey Glasses

Matt Saunders

Any fan of drinking whiskey will tell you that to be enjoyed properly you need to drink it from a glass designed for whiskey and other spirits. After all, you would not consider drinking wine from a beer glass, so why drink whiskey from anything other than a tumbler?

In this article we run through the types of whiskey glasses available, how much they cost and where you can buy from. This guide is designed for fans of whiskey but also serves as a useful resource for gift buyers!

First of all is the humble tumbler; the small glass which holds the whiskey and ice. These are available in so many different styles, from thick bottom glasses with features in them, such as bubbles in the glass bottom, to fine and expensive crystal glasses fit for only the finest single malt scotch!

If you are looking to buy a whiskey tumbler for a friend or relative, you can find a variety of gift boxes in shops and online. These are really very nice because they generally house crystal whiskey glasses complete with coloured silk cloth lining – meaning the glasses are kept in pristine condition as well as being presented beautifully. For the more practical purchase you might want to invest in a set of 6 or 8 glasses, especially if you regularly host parties. These packs can be found in most homeware stores and again, online.

Onto our second glass now and we have the slightly less popular nosing glass. These looks like a cross between a spout and a chalice; elegant and beautiful, and yet serve an important purpose. Nosing glasses are shaped to not only fit comfortably in the hand, but to also channel the scent of the whiskey to the mouth and nose of the drinker. For some people, this is the only way to truly appreciate single malt whiskey.

Whiskey glasses are thankfully not so expensive. You can pick up a nosing glass or a couple of crystal glasses for around £10-£15 in the UK, but it is also true to say that you can pay a lot more if you want a higher quality glass. This range makes whiskey glasses accessible for gift buyers and connoisseurs alike.

There are many ways to enjoy whiskey – as if the range of glasses available were not enough, some drinkers like whiskey on the rocks, other don’t, while some prefer drinking with a mixer or as part of a cocktail. Regardless of how you drink whiskey, you are guaranteed to enjoy it most in a glass designed to hold this beautiful liquid gold!
