Different Types of Whiskey – Know Your Brands

James Hogden

If you live in the USA, bourbon will probably be the most sought after whiskey you can serve, but there are plenty of other good brands and types that people like and you should be familiar with.

BourbonThis whiskey has an amber color and with its sweet flavor is a favorite among many, and for good reason. The strict rules on how this drink is supposed to be made, makes it a brand that smells of quality. It has to be made from more than 50 percent of corn and it must be aged in new charred oak barrels. These are not only guidelines, but are actually backed by law. After they have aged, water can be applied to give it the right proof.

Canadian WhiskyNotice that this whiskey is spelled without the e. This whiskey has a more looser range of rules that it has to follow, but it still needs time to age properly. It blends aged grain whisky and some whisky with more flavor and then it needs to age for atleast three years. The distiller can choose his own preferred proof, grain, formula and even what types of barrels he will use.

Wheat and Corn WhiskeyAhh, my personal favorite. Wheat whiskey must have atleast 51 percent of one type of grain and must be aged for atleast 2 years. This product is actually quite young and has recently been added to stores. For all I know, farmers in the midwest has made it for centuries, but I thank them for giving out the secret at last. The one that I like is the Bernheim Original Straight Wheat Whiskey, which comes in a 90 proof in the stores.

These are some of the most common types of whiskey. You can find some more esoteric ones, but these are the ones I recommend having around your bar when you open. You can also look into some blended whiskey, rye whiskey and maybe som Tennessee whiskey. Just remember to think of the customers you are to serve.
